Ellen Sherman’s paintings begin as whole works that she cuts apart and reassembles, fragment by fragment, into new collective forms.
Built on canvas, paper, and wood cut with a jigsaw, each piece is composed so that its parts act on one another; aligning, intensifying, or overtaking until a coherence emerges.
The work spans a range from spare, organic configurations to densely layered compositions, each one carrying the visible seams of its own making.
